Marriott, Hilton & Ihg Fitness Standards: What Your Hotel Gym Needs To Meet Brand Requirements

Hotel Fitness Standards:What Marriott, Hilton and IHG Actually Require

Are there any hotel fitness standards? Yes, absolutely. What's more,  hotel fitness standards are getting stricter. The gym equipment is audited as part of Marriott, Hilton and IHG  brand compliance checks. If you're converting a property to one of these flags, or upgrading an existing gym to pass inspection, you need to know what's required before you spend a dollar.

Here's what the three major hotel groups expect and how to buy equipment that keeps you compliant without overpaying.

What the Brand Truly Demands

Marriott

Marriott has the most clearly documented fitness standards. Their brand tiers each carry a minimum equipment list. Courtyard and Residence Inn properties need at least 2-3 cardio units, a multi-station strength machine or a few selectorized options and a bench with dumbbells.

Full-service brands like Marriott Hotels and Westin go further. Westin's WestinWORKOUT program expects dedicated strength equipment alongside cardio and gets audited quarterly in many regions. If you're supplying a Westin, plan for a serious strength zone, not a token bench in the corner.

Hilton

Hilton runs a similar structure. Their "Five Feet to Fitness" concept applies to selected brands and packs 10+ pieces of equipment into compact spaces. Standard Hilton and DoubleTree gyms need at least 3-4 cardio units, a strength station, benches and dumbbells up to 50 lbs.

Embassy Suites and Homewood Suites often require more. Many of those properties include a functional trainer or Smith machine to hit the brand's strength expectations.

IHG

IHG is less prescriptive at the brand level. Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza both specify fitness room essentials, but owners get more flexibility on equipment selection. The catch is IHG's brand standard audits still verify that cardio machines work, strength equipment is present and equipment is on a maintenance schedule.

Focus on durability and uptime, not just meeting a checklist. IHG auditors are more likely to flag a broken treadmill than a missing machine model.

Core Equipment Zones Are Needed by Every Hotel Gym

Cardio Zone

Cardio belongs to the most audited category in hotel fitness. Usually an elliptical and bike are needed as two treadmills at least in most cases. Look for commercial treadmills with a 3.0+ HP continuous-duty motor like the M005-TFT Commercial Treadmill

. Hotel guests use these machines at all hours, and a residential-grade unit would probably fail within 18 months.

Upright bikes are common in hotel gyms because they're compact and need less maintenance than recumbent models. The M-7808R Upright Bike

is a solid fit for properties with tight square footage. Pair it with an elliptical like the M-8809EL Elliptical

to cover low-impact users, who make up a large share of hotel fitness traffic.

Strength Zone

Marriott and Hilton inspectors look for defined strength areas. That means at least 3-5 selectorized machines or a functional trainer. A cable crossover like the XHA005 Cable Crossover covers a lot of territory in one footprint. It's also one of the safest options for guests who may not know how to use free weights.

For properties with more space, adding selectorized machines signals a real commitment to strength training. The MEL-001 Chest Press and MEL-002 Pec Fly are two pieces that auditors recognize as commercial-grade. Hilton's higher-tier brands appreciate this; Marriott's full-service brands expect it.

Free Weights

Every major hotel brand requires a bench and dumbbells. At minimum you need an adjustable bench, a dumbbell rack with pairs from 5-50 lbs, and a barbell rack with an Olympic bar. The XHA-030 Dumbbell Rack and XHA-023A Weight Bench cover this requirement cleanly.

Smith machines are popular in hotels because they reduce liability while still offering a full strength workout. The ZH-020 Smith Machine is a practical addition when you have at least 250 sq ft of strength space.

Your Brand Tiers Influence Commercial Hotel Fitness Equipment Purchase

Limited-Service and Select-Service Hotels

Holiday Inn Express, Courtyard, Fairfield, and Hampton Inn properties typically have smaller fitness rooms. Work with 3 cardio units, one multi-station or functional trainer, a bench, and a dumbbell rack. The ZH-005A Functional Trainer is ideal here because it replaces 4-5 single-station machines while exceeding brand expectations for strength equipment.

Full-Service and Convention Hotels

Properties under Marriott Hotels, Hilton, Sheraton, or Crowne Plaza need more. Build a lineup with 4-6 cardio units, a cable crossover, 4-6 selectorized machines and a defined free weights zone. MBH's MEL series gives you a complete selectorized line at ex-factory prices with full aftersales support, which is what multi-property owners look for when outfitting several locations at once.

Consider the Tips before Buying Hotel Gym Equipment

Point 1:Prioritize service and warranty over initial price. A treadmill running 24/7 will need maintenance within 2-3 years.

Point 2:Confirm parts availability and technical support before ordering, especially if equipment ships from overseas

Point 3:Look for powder-coated frames and 11-gauge steel. These specs matter more than brand logos in an audit

Point 4:Verify cardio deck warranties cover at least 5 years and frame warranties cover 10 years or more.

Point 5:Ask about mixed container shipping if you're outfitting multiple properties with different brand requirements.

Get the equipment list matched to your brand tier first, then worry about pricing. The cheapest machine that gets flagged in an audit costs you more than a higher-quality unit that passes inspection for a decade.
